Which self-hosted team collaboration software is best?

View profile

We are looking for self-hosted team collaboration software for our company. We do not want to keep all our internal conversations and files on a third-party cloud platform like Slack or MS teams, so we’re considering something we can host on our own server.

We need a solution where our teams can chat, share files, make voice/video calls, and manage different users and groups. We also need the option to customize the interface and workflows around how our teams actually work.

We have looked at a few options like MirrorFly and Rocket chat, but it is difficult to understand which ones are easy to deploy and maintain without giving up customization.

Has anyone here implemented a self-hosted collaboration solution for their company? What did you end up using, and how well has it worked for your team?

A few worth comparing. Mattermost is the closest to Slack, easy to run with Docker or its Helm chart, and has solid permissions plus a good plugin and webhook story. Rocket.Chat gives you more UI customization and built-in video, but it's heavier to operate since it depends on MongoDB. Zulip's topic-based threads are great if your teams struggle with noisy channels. Matrix (Synapse + Element) is the most flexible and supports end-to-end encryption and federation, but it has the most moving parts. For voice and video, most of these pair well with a self-hosted Jitsi Meet, and Nextcloud with Talk is worth a look if file sharing matters as much as chat. Whichever you pick, plan backups and upgrades from day one, because that's where the real maintenance cost lives.
