What you will build

A monitoring service with charts, alerts and a public status page, the same idea companies pay for.

Starting point: you only need a Vultr account. This challenge is self-contained, so you can do it without having done any other.

The plan

  1. Deploy an instance and install Docker
  2. Run Uptime Kuma in a container with a persistent volume
  3. Add monitors for two websites (your own and one other)
  4. Create a status page and publish it
  5. Stop a web server you control and confirm the monitor turns red
  6. Set up a notification such as email or a chat message
BASH
docker run -d --restart=always -p 3001:3001 -v uptime-kuma:/app/data --name uptime-kuma louislam/uptime-kuma:1

Protect the admin page with a strong password and do not expose it more widely than you need to.

Stretch goals

  • Monitor a TCP port, not just HTTP
  • Add a maintenance window
  • Put the status page behind HTTPS

Requirements

Uptime Kuma running with a persistent volume

Two monitors configured

Status page published

A failure detected and shown
