POINTS

What you will build

A private file-sync service with web, desktop and mobile access, plus tested backups.

Starting point: you only need a Vultr account. This challenge is self-contained, so you can do it without having done any other.

The plan

  1. Deploy Nextcloud with Docker Compose on a Vultr instance
  2. Add HTTPS with a real certificate
  3. Create a user and sync a folder from your laptop or phone
  4. Schedule nightly backups of data and database to Object Storage
  5. Destroy the app, restore from backup on a fresh instance, and confirm your files are back
BASH
0 2 * * * /opt/nextcloud/backup.sh >> /var/log/nc-backup.log 2>&1

How you will be judged

  • Restore actually worked
  • Backups are scheduled, not manual
  • Admin access is secured (strong password, 2FA or similar)

Take the first backup before you add anything important. You will want it.

Requirements

Nextcloud running behind HTTPS

Scheduled backups to Object Storage

Full restore tested on a fresh instance
